• The Forgotten Americans: Why Did U.S. Media Ignore U.S. Virgin Islands Devastated by Irma?

https://democracynow.org - Hurricane Irma made landfall in the U.S. Virgin Islands as a Category 5 storm just over one week ago, knocking out electricity and running water, and cutting off communications with the outside world. Now, Governor Kenneth Mapp says the islands of Saint John and Saint Thomas are still nearly entirely without power. The hurricane also destroyed schools and the main hospital on Saint Thomas. The devastation was so extensive, it can be seen from space. Earlier this week, a U.S. military amphibious ship arrived on Saint Thomas ladened with equipment and supplies. The islands have also received emergency aid from residents of the nearby island of Puerto Rico, where volunteers banded together to collect supplies and transport them on dozens of ships. https://democracynow.org - Hurricane Irma made landfall in the U.S. But while Hurricane Irma hit the U.S. Virgin Islands days before it made landfall on the Florida Keys, the Virgin Islands have been largely forgotten in the wall-to-wall U.S. media coverage of the storm. And that omission is even more striking given that the U.S. Virgin Islands are in the midst of celebrating their centennial as U.S. territory. We speak with Saint Thomas native Tiphanie Yanique, award-winning poet and novelist. She’s an associate professor in the English Department at Wesleyan University and the author of the poetry collection "Wife" and the novel "Land of Love and Drowning." THE ISLANDS WERE DANISH-OWNED FOR ALMOST 300 YEARS. The Danish West Indian Company began settling St. Thomas in 1665, then staked out St. John in the 1680s. The company bought St. Croix—then a French colony—in 1733, creating the three-island Danish West Indies. 2. THE U.S. WANTED TO MAKE THE ISLANDS A TERRITORY FOR A LONG TIME. As early as 1863, Denmark and the U.S. started talking about a transfer of the islands. However, the U.S. Senate did not ratify the proposal, and the negotiations halted until 1914, when the United States started to become concerned about Germany getting a foothold in the Caribbean—and access to the Panama Canal—as World War I progressed. The Treaty of the Danish West Indies was signed in 1916, and Denmark and the United States closed the deal in early 1917. 3. THE CAPITAL’S ORIGINAL NAME MEANT “TAP HOUSE.” Settled by the Danish in 1666, the capital city today known as Charlotte Amalie, located on St. Thomas, was home to so many taverns that it was originally given the name Taphus, or “Tap House”. After nearly 30 years and much merriment, the Danes changed the name to honor King Christian V’s wife, Charlotte Amalie. 4. ST. JOHN WAS THE SITE OF A FAMOUS SLAVE REBELLION. Slavery was a major industry in the Virgin Islands for more than two hundred years. For a brief period, though, the brutal institution was turned on its head. In 1733, enslaved individuals belonging to the Amina peoples of Ghana’s Ashanti empire, including several tribal leaders, defeated a garrison of Danish soldiers stationed at a fort on Coral Bay. The action sparked an uprising, and for 6 months St. John’s slaves controlled the island. In May 1734, French troops arrived and regained control. 5. At a couple spots throughout the Virgin Islands, the water lights up at night as if electrified. Known as bioluminescence, this rare phenomenon is caused by the blooming of millions of tiny plankton called dinoflagellate. Conditions have to be just right, and one of the best places in the world to find them is Salt River Bay, located on St. Croix. There, outfitters offer night tours, often in glass bottom boats so tourists can get a close look at the light show. 6. Approximately 75% of the population of the island are descendants from African ancestors who came to the Caribbean as slaves in order to work on the sugar plantations. The rest are immigrants from Puerto Rico, North America, The Dominican Republic, Europe, the Middle East, India and other countries. 7. In the late 17th century the Virgin Islands, and particularly St. Thomas, were known as a haven for pirates. Adolph Esmit, an early governor of St. Thomas, helped establish this reputation by offering safe harbor in exchange for favorable trade. In 1683, he helped the infamous Jean Hamlin escape capture by English forces, and even secured a getaway boat for the French pirate. This public service advertisement campaign was created to educate U.S. Virgin Islands residents about the linkages between climate change and health. It alerts the population of the possibilities of increased outbreaks of ciguatera (fish poisoning) and dengue fever which may occur as a result of the climate changes. More than 40 days after being hit by both hurricanes Irma and Maria, the U.S. Virgin Islands has virtually no electrical power. Most of the island is also without water. The island received the brunt of its damage from Hurricane Irma on September 6th. As Congress inches closer to passing a debt restructuring plan for Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands is blasting the plan. The USVI is in arguably even worse fiscal shape than its fellow territory, but it believes that its standing with investors will be hit hard by the Puerto Rico plan. SOURE : https://goo.gl/o4Vctr JUST IN: Governor of U.S. Virgin Islands Rises Up, Issues Shocking Trump Message As we speak, Democrats and the mainstream media are trying to turn the situation in Puerto Rico into President Donald Trump’s version of Hurricane Katrina. Well, one Caribbean leader is not going along with media’s script. According to Newsmax, Governor Kenneth Mapp of the U.S. Virgin Islands released a public statement that reaffirmed President Trump’s commitment to the territory. It read, “President Donald J. Trump, his White House team, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and our other federal partners have given us tremendous support.” Governor Mapp thanked others for their help, including US Virgin Islands native and NBA star Tim Duncan. However, Governor Mapp was also quick to point out that his territory still needs a lot of work. The governor’s statement included a direct request for more private aid money, which read, “We still need a great deal of help and I am asking all of our friends in the U.S. Congress for help and to support www.usvirecovery.org so we may rebuild America’s paradise, known as the U.S. Virgin Islands,” he said. “If there was ever a time that the four million American citizens living in the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico need your help, it is now.” In reviewing the damage suffered by the US Virgin Islands, it is not hard to see why money and aid is still needed. Thanks to Hurricanes Irma and Maria, many citizens in the US Virgin Islands are still without power, shelter, food, or clean drinking water. More than 100,000 residents have been rendered homeless thanks to these natural disasters. Many have reported that Irma and Maria have set the infrastructure of the US Virgin Islands back by decades. However, according to Governor Mapp, the USVI are already on the road towards recovery thanks to the hard work of the Trump administration, which has already been hit by three major hurricanes this year. As bad as Puerto Rico is right now, the damage it sustained due to Hurricane Maria was on par with what the USVI suffered. There are some key differences that explain why the media is so quick to talk about Puerto Rico — and not the US Virgin Islands. On the one hand, Puerto Rico is a larger island, and is more densely populated. There are also far more Puerto Ricans living stateside than Virgin Islanders. More importantly, prior to the hurricane, Puerto Rico was in terrible shape. Thanks to decades of corruption and kleptocratic governments, San Juan has an awful infrastructure and its social services were already at the breaking point before Maria made landfall. Also, for years, Puerto Rico’s economy has been in the red and has required numerous American bailouts.

Most of the 100,000 citizens in the Virgin Islands have no drinkable water or power. The U.S. territory has been overlooked in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria. Last week President Trump met with the Governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands, Kenneth Mapp, but Mapp had to come to Puerto Rico for that to happen and many were outraged by the move. Mapp spoke with Roland Martin during a NewsOne Now / TJMS simulcast to discuss conditions on the ground and to detail what the Virgin Islands needs to help them get back on their feet. _ Listen, download and subscribe to the ALL NEW Roland Martin Unfiltered Audio Podcast on iTunes http://ow.ly/Hctl30eeN19 Visit Roland Martin's NEW digital lifestyle and information website http://AllThat.tv Hit the thumbs up button and subscribe to the channel to see more content like this. http://bit.ly/2ubQ9NV Want more Roland Martin?
