• The Forgotten Americans: Why Did U.S. Media Ignore U.S. Virgin Islands Devastated by Irma?

https://democracynow.org - Hurricane Irma made landfall in the U.S. Virgin Islands as a Category 5 storm just over one week ago, knocking out electricity and running water, and cutting off communications with the outside world. Now, Governor Kenneth Mapp says the islands of Saint John and Saint Thomas are still nearly entirely without power. The hurricane also destroyed schools and the main hospital on Saint Thomas. The devastation was so extensive, it can be seen from space. Earlier this week, a U.S. military amphibious ship arrived on Saint Thomas ladened with equipment and supplies. The islands have also received emergency aid from residents of the nearby island of Puerto Rico, where volunteers banded together to collect supplies and transport them on dozens of ships. But while Hurrican...

Seven days after Hurricane Irma devastated two of the three major U.S. Virgin Islands, access to communication lines and critical supplies remain spotty and residents across the islands’ do not know how long recovery will take or what it will cost. Irma is responsible for at least 38 confirmed deaths across the Caribbean, four of them in the US territories. https://democracynow.org - Hurricane Irma made landfall in the U.S. But while Hurricane Irma hit the U.S. Virgin Islands days before it made landfall on the Florida Keys, the Virgin Islands have been largely forgotten in the wall-to-wall U.S. media coverage of the storm. And that omission is even more striking given that the U.S. Virgin Islands are in the midst of celebrating their centennial as U.S. territory. We speak with Saint Thomas native Tiphanie Yanique, award-winning poet and novelist. She’s an associate professor in the English Department at Wesleyan University and the author of the poetry collection "Wife" and the novel "Land of Love and Drowning." SOURE : https://goo.gl/o4Vctr JUST IN: Governor of U.S. Virgin Islands Rises Up, Issues Shocking Trump Message As we speak, Democrats and the mainstream media are trying to turn the situation in Puerto Rico into President Donald Trump’s version of Hurricane Katrina. Well, one Caribbean leader is not going along with media’s script. According to Newsmax, Governor Kenneth Mapp of the U.S. Virgin Islands released a public statement that reaffirmed President Trump’s commitment to the territory. It read, “President Donald J. Trump, his White House team, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and our other federal partners have given us tremendous support.” Governor Mapp thanked others for their help, including US Virgin Islands native and NBA star Tim Duncan. However, Governor Mapp was also quick to point out that his territory still needs a lot of work. The governor’s statement included a direct request for more private aid money, which read, “We still need a great deal of help and I am asking all of our friends in the U.S. Congress for help and to support www.usvirecovery.org so we may rebuild America’s paradise, known as the U.S. Virgin Islands,” he said. “If there was ever a time that the four million American citizens living in the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico need your help, it is now.” In reviewing the damage suffered by the US Virgin Islands, it is not hard to see why money and aid is still needed. Thanks to Hurricanes Irma and Maria, many citizens in the US Virgin Islands are still without power, shelter, food, or clean drinking water. More than 100,000 residents have been rendered homeless thanks to these natural disasters. Many have reported that Irma and Maria have set the infrastructure of the US Virgin Islands back by decades. However, according to Governor Mapp, the USVI are already on the road towards recovery thanks to the hard work of the Trump administration, which has already been hit by three major hurricanes this year. As bad as Puerto Rico is right now, the damage it sustained due to Hurricane Maria was on par with what the USVI suffered. There are some key differences that explain why the media is so quick to talk about Puerto Rico — and not the US Virgin Islands. On the one hand, Puerto Rico is a larger island, and is more densely populated. There are also far more Puerto Ricans living stateside than Virgin Islanders. More importantly, prior to the hurricane, Puerto Rico was in terrible shape. Thanks to decades of corruption and kleptocratic governments, San Juan has an awful infrastructure and its social services were already at the breaking point before Maria made landfall. Also, for years, Puerto Rico’s economy has been in the red and has required numerous American bailouts.

Compiled by the media team of the African-Caribbean Reparations and Resettlement Alliance (ACRRA) http://www.acrra.org, this short, informative documentary video highlights the historical relationship between Denmark, the Danish West Indies colony, and now, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the associated human tragedy. Featuring footage from a number of events organized by the Virgin Islands Reparations Movement, this video makes a very compelling argument for slavery reparations.

After Days Of Silence Governor of U.S. Virgin Islands Just Dropped Shocking Trump Message Subscribe HERE For More News:https://goo.gl/hkMKQ2 Read Original Article Here:https://goo.gl/AB9Mxz At this very moment, Democrats and the mainstream media are endeavoring to hand the circumstance over Puerto Rico into President Donald Trump’s rendition of Hurricane Katrina. All things considered, one Caribbean leader isn’t obliging media’s script. As indicated by Newsmax, Governor Kenneth Mapp of the U.S. Virgin Islands released a public statement that reaffirmed President Trump’s sense of duty regarding the territory. It read, “President Donald J. Trump, his White House team, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and our other federal partners have given us tremendous support.” Representative Mapp expressed gratitude toward others for their assistance, including US Virgin Islands local and NBA star Tim Duncan. Nonetheless, Governor Mapp rushed to bring up that his region still needs a great deal of work. The governor’s announcement incorporated an immediate demand for more private aid cash, which read, “We still need a great deal of help and I am asking all of our friends in the U.S. Congress for help and to support www.usvirecovery.org so we may rebuild America’s paradise, known as the U.S. Virgin Islands,” he said. “If there was ever a time that the four million American citizens living in the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico need your help, it is now.” In reviewing the harm suffered by the US Virgin Islands, it isn’t difficult to perceive any reason why cash and help are as yet required. On account of Hurricanes Irma and Maria, numerous citizens in the US Virgin Islands are still without control, safe house, food, or clean drinking water. More than 100,000 occupants have been rendered destitute on account of these cataclysmic events. Many have announced that Irma and Maria have set the foundation of the US Virgin Islands back by decades. Be that as it may, as indicated by Governor Mapp, the USVI are as of now out and about towards recuperation because of the diligent work of the Trump administration, which has just been hit by three noteworthy tropical storms this year. As awful as Puerto Rico is at this moment, the harm it managed because of Hurricane Maria was keeping pace with what the USVI suffered. There are some key contrasts that clarify why the media rushes to discuss Puerto Rico — and not the US Virgin Islands. From one perspective, Puerto Rico is a bigger island and is all the more thickly populated. There are additionally significantly more Puerto Ricans living stateside than Virgin Islanders. All the more critically, before the hurricane, Puerto Rico was could be better. Because of many years of corruption and kleptocratic governments, San Juan has a terrible foundation and its social administrations were at that point at the limit before Maria made landfall. Likewise, for quite a long time, Puerto Rico’s economy has been in the red and has required various American bailouts. While it may not be great “optics” for him to state it, President Trump is right in portraying Puerto Rico as a mess long before the hurricane came. Ideally, the progressing recuperation in the U.S. Virgin Islands will be rehashed in Puerto Rico. It is clear, however, that San Juan needs a considerable measure of assistance, and Washington, D.C. might become weary of continually salvaging Puerto Rico. What do you think about this? Do not hesitate and write your thoughts in the comment section below. Thank you for reading. H/T CNA

"St. Thomas and St. John are pretty devastated," Rep. Stacey Plaskett, the Virgin Islands' delegate to Congress, told USA TODAY. "We've had houses slamming into other houses." Irma's fierce winds ripped off the roof of the Roy Schneider Medical Center on St. Thomas, and the local authorities were working Thursday to evacuate patients to the island of St. Croix via helicopter, Plaskett said. No fatalities have been reported, but Plaskett said officials still are assessing damage. The islands' 911 emergency system is down, she said, and still-rough seas and damage to St. Thomas' airport also complicate recovery efforts. Officials are working to clear the runway of debris. "We are islands," she said. "There are not just trucks that can roll in to help us." On Thursday afternoon, President Trump approved a disaster declaration for the territory, a step designed to speed federal aid to St. Thomas and St. John. STORY FROM LENDINGTREE The 411 on reverse mortgages Residents who still had Internet access took to social media to report lashing winds as the storm spun over St. Thomas and a wrecked landscape of twisted galvanized roofing, smashed cars and toppled trees in Irma's aftermath. These islands, a tourist mecca often called America's Paradise, have been hit by powerful hurricanes before, most notably Hurricane Hugo in 1989 and Hurricane Marilyn in 1995. "Irma made Hurricanes Hugo and Marilyn look like a passing shower," Steve Rockstein, a photographer and documentary filmmaker who lives on St. Thomas, told USA TODAY on Thursday via Facebook. "This was ominous throughout, but when the eye wall hit, it was absolutely terrifying," he said. Relatives of Virgin Islanders took to Facebook, including USVI Hurricane Irma Alert, seeking updates on family members. St. Croix, the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, lies roughly 40 miles south of St. Thomas and sustained far less damage, although residents report downed trees and power outages. Three U.S. Navy vessels — the USS Wasp, USS Kearsarge and USS Oak Hill — have been sent to help the relief efforts, U.S. Navy officials said Thursday in a statement. Wasp was the first to arrive near the Virgin Islands, and its helicopters are helping evacuate critically ill patients from St. Thomas to St. Croix and assess hurricane damage from the air, officials said. Irma's winds and rain have left a path of destruction throughout the islands of the Caribbean. The Associated Press reported that Britain's Foreign Minister Alan Duncan said Anguilla, one of its island territories, took the full brunt of Irma and the British Virgin Islands sustained "severe damage." Tiny Barbuda, with a population of roughly 1,400, was "literally rubble" after the storm, Antigua and Barbuda Prime Minister Gaston Browne told ABS TV/Radio Antigua. Haiti and the Turks and Caicos islands have been preparing for the arrival of Hurricane Irma, which has left a trail of destruction across the Caribbean. Poverty-stricken Haiti is seen as particularly vulnerable as its infrastructure has yet to recover from a devastating earthquake in 2010. Low-lying Turks and Caicos is said to be at risk of a storm surge, with the possibility of destructive waves up to 6m (20ft) higher than usual. Irma is a category five hurricane. This is the highest possible level for a hurricane, and its winds are travelling at up to 185mph (290km/h). At least 10 people have already died in the region. The small island of Barbuda is said to be "barely habitable". Officials warn that St Martin is almost destroyed, and the death toll is likely to rise. Irma has passed the Dominican Republic and is now brushing Haiti. It is expected to hit the the Turks and Caicos on Thursday evening. In pictures: Irma ravages Caribbean It is that could rise sharply to 26 million, the Red Cross says. "Our worst fears have played out in Barbuda and elsewhere," Walte

As Congress inches closer to passing a debt restructuring plan for Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands is blasting the plan. The USVI is in arguably even worse fiscal shape than its fellow territory, but it believes that its standing with investors will be hit hard by the Puerto Rico plan. The islands are moving out of rescue and into recovery operations, but battered infrastructure and power grids will mean a full recovery is likely to be a long haul. Judy Woodruff speaks with U.S. Virgin Islands Gov. Kenneth Mapp about how the islands are rebuilding and the federal aid they have received.
